How to make a Bimini Ring Game

Making a game is easy - you can find all of the parts required at most hardware stores - If you don't mind purchasing more than you need, or if you are planning on making several games - the hardware you purchase at the local store will work great. Take a minute to read what is required to make a game - then I'll show you how to get more for your money

Here's a list of what's required...

1 Hook - measuring about 3.5 inches long overall.
1 Ring measuring 1.5 inches in diameter (inside ring).
1 Screw Eye (about 1.375 inches long) to attach the string to the ceiling with.
1 Small Plastic Anchor to insert into the ceiling for the Screw Eye to attach to.
1 Larger Plastic Anchor to insert into the wall for the Hook to attach to.
Note: The Larger Plastic Anchor is not required if you are attaching your hook to a wood post.
1 Piece of String measuring about 6 feet long.

So, how much does all this cost?

Because many of the items you need are sold in prepackaged quantitys at the hardware store - you'll end up paying for some hardware you will not be using - for example - the Hooks come in a package of 12 for about $5.00, the rings are packaged in pairs for $2.00, the Screw Eyes are packaged in a quantity of 100 for about $5.00 and the same is true for the Plastic Anchors. String can be purchased at Bait and Tackle Supply stores or Hardware Stores - figure around $4.00 for a roll of string for your game.

Bimini Ring Game - How to win!

You have probably seen a Bimini Ring Game in your travels.

It's such a simple game to play and so much fun you and your friends will definitely find hours and hours of entertainment playing this game.

How to play...
Typically - the Bimini Ring Game consists of a 1.5 to 2.0 inch diameter metal ring anchored to a ceiling or overhang by a string. The ring is swung like a pendulum from it's anchor point towards a large hook attached to a wall or post. When the ring is adjusted to the correct distance to the hook it's possible to land the ring on the hook without it jumping off. Although it may look easy, and may even sound quite simple, the act of finessing the ring onto the hook is difficult when you first start out. You first need to figure out how hard to
toss the ring - my experience says that if the ring hits the back board or post the hook is attached to - then you tossed the ring too hard and need to toss it a little softer. If the ring however, did not make it all the way to the hook - then obviously you did not toss it hard enough. The perfect toss is one where the ring travels just far enough to where it goes slightly above the top of the hook but does not hit the backboard or the post the hook is attached to.
With some practice - you'll soon learn the correct amount of effort required to make a perfect toss.

Figuring out the correct distance or how hard to toss the ring however, is only the first part of the learning process. You next need to figure out how to send the ring off to one side or the other so it has a slight curve as it heads towards the hook. Sending the ring straight at the hook will result in the ring hitting the hook dead on and bouncing off the hook - back towards the person tossing it. So... by sending the hook a little to the left or right of the hook it will swing out a little then curve back towards the hook and land on top of it! Try picking a point 4 inches or so to the left or right side of the hook and send the ring towards that point. That should cause the swing of the rings path to curve outward slightly - just enough so it will curve back towards the hook and land on top of the hook.

With practice you'll be landing ringers frequently with your new found talent. If you are lucky enough to have someone to fetch for you, you can "freeze" your position and keep trying to set a new record for the most consecutive ringers made by having someone else un-hook the ring and send it back to you - of course, you get to do the same for them when it's their turn to toss the ring.

My personal best is 7 ringers in a row. No doubt there are many others that play the Bimini Ring Game that have made many more in a row than I have. Still - it's great fun and the only person you are really competing against is you!

Bimini Ring Game - Assembly & Installation

Instructions for the Assembly and Installation of your Bimini Ring Game by TropicSigns.com

Instructions:
1) Place the sign / game on the wall with the hook approximately 48 inches from the ceiling or overhang on an 8 foot tall wall.

2) Using a screw included with your Bimini Ring Game, make a mark through the small hole at the top of the sign / game onto the wall. Create a hole slightly smaller than the size of the white plastic anchor included in your kit. Insert the plastic anchor into the wall. Note: The plastic anchor is not required if you are mounting your sign / game to a wooden beam; pole or wall.

3) Mount the Bimini Ring Game to the wall using the #8 phillips head screw provided with your game. Cover the screw head using the small mushroom cap also included with your game. Press the cap firmly into the hole. It's a snug fit - so try to line it up with the hole prior to pressing it into place.

4) Insert the Hook into the Bimini Ring Game by screwing it into the hole near the middle of the sign / game. Screw it in till the threads are no longer visible above the surface of the game. Do not over thread the hook in too deep as it will touch the wall behind the game / sign and begin lifting the sign off the wall.

5) Tie one end of the string provided in your Bimini Ring Game kit to the small eye hook. Make a mark approximately four (4) feet from the wall on the ceiling - straight back from the Bimini Ring Game on the wall. Make a hole in the ceiling slightly smaller than the white plastic anchor provided in your kit and insert the anchor into the ceiling. Note: If you are installing the Eye Hook into a wooden ceiling or support beam, the plastic anchor is not required. Insert the Eye Hook into the plastic anchor - or screw it into the wooden support beam if required.

6) Take the free end of the string to the hook installed in the Bimini Ring Game on the wall and tie the Ring included in your kit to the string. When adjusted correctly the tip of the hook will be in the middle of the ring when the string is pulled taunt from the eye hook above. Support the ring over the hook and adjust the knot you tie till the hook is in the center of the ring. Keep adjusting the length untill you achieve the required distance. If the string is adjusted too short the ring will not be able to catch the hook when tossed, and if adjusted too long, it will hit the back of the game / sign and bounce away from the hook making it difficult to land a ringer. Leave a couple of inches of extra thread past your knot for the first few throws while you make certain you have your length adjusted correctly.

Parrot Head Gift Idea

I've been a Parrot Head for longer than I care to admit...

I've probably received every album Jimmy produced at least 4 times as gifts from well intentioned friends. Truth be told - they never go to waste, I have a copy for my car, office, boat and home.

It can be difficult finding a gift that appeals to the Phlock, one that hasn't been over sold or that you see everyone carrying at a concert. That's one of the reasons we created the Salt Happens Bimini Ring Game. Just the name of the game alone should be a great inspiration for a Buffett song - Salt Happens!

Photos of Winners...

Over the past couple of years we have had a lot of fun setting up a Bimini Ring Game at our exhibit booths at the trade shows we attend. Our customers visiting the booth really enjoy trying their hand at getting a ringer and we often reward them when they succeed with a cool prize or gift.

At some of the events we have given away Endless Summer T Shirts, or a Ring Toss Champion T Shirt, at others we have given away Stickers or Decals and Koozie Cups (can coolers). We try to keep it light hearted and fun for everyone and ask the winners to don a pair of really tropical sun glasses (think 60's style flamingos and palm trees) and then take their picture holding their prize, the pictures are pretty funny. We also add a caption to the images that has no real connection to the person winning the game - it's all in fun!

Surf Expo August 2009 - What a show! Was great to see so many of our customers and meet so many new friends. Game Rules...

Here's some suggestions on different ways to play the game, these suggestions are based on the experience we have had playing the game at many Bars; Restaraunts and our Booths at Trade Shows.

The Bimini Ring Game can be played indoors or outdoors, in either case you will need about 8 feet of floor space from the wall where the Hook is attached - so try to plan a location that wont interfere with the regular traffic pattern of other people working their way around the venue. Having the hook well lit helps also. If you are installing a game for the first time - this article on Assembly and Installation might be of help.

There are two primary ways to hold a fun competition with your Bimini Ring Game.

Method 1:
Each player is given an opportunity to "warm up" - let each one toss till they get a ringer, then move to the next person. Try to keep the number of people playing in a given heat to 4 or less.

After each person has warmed up - begin the game by having the first player toss till they get a ringer. Count the number of trys they make till successfull. That then becomes the target or goal for the next player to beat. If the next player is able to beat the first player by getting a ringer in less trys than the first player - their score becomes the new target for all other players to beat. Continue working your way through the participants till you have a clear winner. In the event of a tie, have the players with the same score face off with each other and see how many trys it takes to get a ringer. The winner is the one who gets a ringer with the fewest trys.

Method 2:
Again each player is given an opportunity to warm up by tossing the ring till they get a ringer.

In this method each player is given an opportunity to try and get the most ringers possible in a series of 10 consecutive throws. The person with the highest number wins! It helps if you can have someone "un-hook" the ring for the person tossing the ring, by doing so, the person tossing the ring can "freeze" thier position which helps increase the probability of being able to repeat the process of getting a ringer greatly.

Each participant is given an opportunity to toss the ring 10 times, keeping score of the number of ringers they get in the series. In the event of a tie, the players face off against one another and try again for the highest number of ringers in a series of 10.

In the event a player gets 10 in a row - you should allow them to continue tossing the ring untill they miss - setting a new mark for the next person to match or beat.
